My husband and I like primitive camping and have heard this is a great place to go in Illinois. I have also heard that camping is allowed on the islands. Does anyone know where we could rent a boat for several days and would this be a workable, good idea? Are there places along the river to tie up for shore activities? Any info and thoughts shared are very much appreciated!
Thanks, Elaine
Camping in Mississippi Palisades State Park
Palisades State Park is our favorite State Park. The campground within the park is very large. I can%26#39;t help much with primitive camping on the islands because we are pretty much RV campers. We used to tent camp years ago at this park. There are many nice sites for camping, especially in the back of the park. The park used to be very crowded on the weekends, but not so much so anymore. One thing to consider is that the park and campground are very close to the railroad crossing. It can be difficult sleeping unless you are acustomed to very loud trains and horns blowing frequently at the crossing. The further away from the crossing in the back of the CG the better.
I can%26#39;t help with the boat rental question either, although I believe there are a couple of marina%26#39;s south of town. There are tons of places along the river to tie up and picnic, swim, etc. Most of them are very sandy and easy to access. Boat beaching is fairly popular in the area.
You should be very careful boating and swimming on the river. It is can be very shallow and the current is strong. There are channel markers that should be observed, or you could find yourself stuck on a sand bar. There are also many river barges that have priority on the water and in the locks. If you aren%26#39;t familiar with locking priorities, don%26#39;t go through the locks!
